When 527’s Attack!
You knew it was going to happen eventually; the return of the 527’s. For those who don’t know or remember, the most famous example of a 527 group was the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth who, well, swiftboated John Kerry. 527’s are a funny breed, they are officially listed as non-profits but they can raise money and pay for ads while avoiding FEC regulations. American Leadership Project, a pro-Hillary outfit, is running an ad in Indiana saying that Obama has no real economic plan and calls on voter to call Obama and ask him for a real plan. Obviously the Obama camp isn’t too happy about this, but there isn’t a lot they can do about it legally. Here’s the ad in question, I don’t think it’s all that bad as far as attack ads go.
UPDATE - The Obama camp has filed a complaint with the FEC claiming that American Leadership Project knowingly violated FEC rules by not registeringas a PAC instead of a 527. It’ll be interesting to see how this pans out.
