Because the DNC can do without a full-time chairman until 2010, right?
Now, just two weeks before his inauguration, comes word from Democratic sources that President-elect Barack Obama later this week will name Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine as part-time chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
The appointment will reportedly come with the understanding that next year, when Kaine loses his governor’s job due to the state’s one-term limit, facing unemployment, he will become the full-time face of the DNC, which has a dual responsibility of frequent partisan attack dog in the media and prolific national party fundraiser.
This works for the DNC only if Ed Morrissey is right, that Kaine will be a figurehead while Axlerod pulls the strings. Kaine, while a Dem up and comer, has zero experience in anything on a national level. Axlerod has plenty of experience in what the Dems need now, namely fundraising and public speaking. The DNC especially needs the fundraising, seeing as Obama seems to be disinterested in campaigning for anyone but himself and their coffers aren’t exactly robust.
Maybe Axlerod is the new Rove after all. Wonder if anyone on the Left will complain.
